Sowing Seeds

Recently the Holy Spirit has often been whispering into my heart this one question when I am in conversation with someone:

What are you sowing?

It almost always catches me off-guard. He is never saying it to shame me, but simply, as a kind Father, He just poses the question so I remain aware.

There are many verses in Scripture that point to the idea of sowing and reaping. Sow means “to plant (seed) by scattering it on or in the earth”, and reap means “cut or gather (a crop or harvest)” or “receive (a reward or benefit) as a consequence of one’s own or other people’s actions”.

One example can be found in the New Testament:
Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”  – Galatians 6:7-9

So, whatever we “plant” will grow and be gathered and received. What I have sensed God calling me to awareness of is the fact that we have the ability to sow different seeds in conversation with others; sometimes they are good seeds and sometimes they are bad. In James 3 it says, “How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!” If you’re a human being, you’ve most definitely either ‘started a fire’ with your speech or have seen the effects of it in someone else’s life!

The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.” – Proverbs 18:21

I don’t know about you, but I would like to choose to reap eternal life from the seeds that I plant. Talking is a natural and daily part of our lives, whether it is out loud to others or internally to ourselves. We should be aware if we are starting fires or putting them out!

(I wasn’t intending on going this direction, but the Holy Spirit just dropped this example in my pocket, so please bear with me!) We watched a documentary the other night called Under the Gun, and it really exposes the paranoia-culture that exists due to seeds of fear sown in Americans by the NRA and the media. I think that this is a good (and extreme) example of the sowing-reaping image, in our world today. This lobbying group has been sowing from the flesh in order to have power in politics and it is absolutely reaping corruption and death in a nation– we see it in the news daily. It is time to sow seeds of life and love, the way that Jesus did.

So, what are you sowing in your conversations?
Seeds of hope? Of fearLife? Seeds of depression? Joy? Love? Courage?
